Games on video are always a fun time and something that we really need during the COVID lockdown. I shared my knowledge of how to play retro games on Mac a few years back, and also the methods to patch games to well-known ROM hacks, such as Invictus. Performance is just one of the major disadvantages Macs aren’t equipped to handle. The typical gaming computer is faster and has, therefore, better gameplay. Let’s look at how to play old-fashioned games on Windows!

Step 1: Download and install RetroArch

RetroArch is a free and open-source software that powers RetroPie, Recalbox, and other video games programs. RetroArch can be installed on nearly every computer, but in this case we’ll be installing it on our Windows PC. It’s simple to install, meaning there’s no need to fuss.

Step 2 Install Emulators

After RetroArch has been installed and opened, you can go to the menu item:

  • Load Core
  • Download a Core
  • Select the video-game system / emulator you like

You’ll need to look at the different options that are available to you, such as SNES. For example there is the “higan Accuracy”, which requires more resources, is not as popular than the snes9x.Read about At website The snes9x is also used by streamers and the bsnes2014 performance makes games seem more responsive. There are many emulators you can download in one click.

Step 3: Let’s play!

Now it’s time to get started! Drag your ROM file to the RetroArch window. RetroArch will launch an emulator that matches your ROM’s format. It’s really that simple.

But where do you go to find or patch these games?

Game ROMs

Legally, you can create ROMs from the games you own, but it is illegal to download them. That’s it. However, this is the internet and should you stumble upon ROMs via an Google search, I will not condemn you. It’s easy to do…

How can you make ROM Hacks by Patching ROMs

It is an essential part of retro gaming. Legendary Super Mario World hackers Juz King and Barbarous Kings make use of Lunar Magic, to transform the vanilla Super Mario World in amazing new “Kaizo”. These hacks are fantastic because they bring life to things I loved growing up. The hacks will be uploaded to SMWCentral once they are ready. There will be thousands of gamers able to download the hacks.

Hacks aren’t allowed to be shared as the complete game, which would be illegal. Thus, hacks are generally an bps file that needs to be installed onto a clean ROM to create the modified playable game. Grand Poo World 2, Invictus or Super Dram World are some my top SNES modifications.

If you own a clean version of Super Mario World SNES, then we could patch it to create one the hacks above. Floating IP is the application that performs the Windows patching. Floating IPS is easy. It prompts to download the name of the file (bps) and the ROM to apply it, as well as the desired output file name.

This is the traditional way to patch your games. You can also modify gameplay with additional customizations like including replays in your games.

Controls are by far the most straightforward aspect of playing games on Windows. You can use the keyboard as your controller in most emulators. Many USB controllers can function as a controller if like me and would like to have the best experience you can get.

I am an avid gamer and software engineer. I find the world of emulators as well as hacking ROMs, patching them streaming, and streaming fascinating. I love the fact that ROM hackers maintain our beloved childhood games, while making them more challenging and rewarding. RetroArch’s UI is greatly upgraded. It’s not perfect but it’s difficult, but it was simple to install the emulators and up and running in a matter of minutes.
